ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PERFORMANCE
A kind of complementarity links the two works: the Serva padrona launches the genre of the intermezzo (the origin of comic opera) in the 18th century on a European scale, also due to the debate that arose between philosophes (including Rousseau) regarding the idea to entrust insignificant events to ordinary characters. Alfred too , Alfred is not surprisingly subtitled “intermezzo”, in the name of a salacious and sardonic buffoonery on the condition of passivity in a healthcare facility, when buffoonery, in the musical theater of the late 20th century, has been almost out of use for some time. Two singularities, each concerned with its own time.
Even the natural distance of musical language between the two works conceals correspondences in their respective caricatural and ironic conveying functions; between lively softnesses of strings (Pergolesi) and shrill asymmetric tinklings (Donatoni).
Alfred, Alfred , was born from a hospitalization experience lived by the author, Franco Donatoni, in 1992: a journey suspended between the surreality of the visions of a patient and the reality of hospital life, equally surreal. Divided into six scenes and six interludes, the libretto starts from the dialogues of everyday hospital life, where the patient / Donatoni stands out in his bed, while everything is happening around him.
